9 Ways to recycle Charcoal leftover from BBQ Party

A rough estimate would be 1kg of charcoal equal to half an hour of grilling session. For 5 to 8 person barbecue session, 3 kg of charcoal would suffice. Recycle leftover Charcoal

If you have ever found yourself with some leftover charcoal lumps after every grilling session, you may be wondering what you can do to them other than just using it for grilling.
You are right in thinking there is other ways to use charcoal besides just using it for grilling session. The following is the list of Uses for Leftover Charcoal.

1.Natural Air Freshener/Dehumidifier 

Put a few pieces of charcoal lumps in shoes storage cabinet, pantry (refrigerator and dry food cabinets) area, book storage and other areas where moisture can create a musty smell – It will keep air smelling fresh and reduce the chance of odour, mildew and unpleasant food smells in an enclosed area.

2.Fresher Flowers

Drop a small piece of charcoal lump into the vase before adding water and fresh-cut flowers will last longer. Charcoal helps to ensure the water in the vase will stay clean and clear. If you have orchids in your bouquet, even better if you treat them with a little ground charcoal in their pot. Orchids stay great after addition of ground charcoal (They love alkalinity).


3.Nourish Compost Heap

Depending on size of your compost pile, include small amount of charcoal ashes, partially burned charcoal or small charcoal lumps in your compost pile and mix well to increase carbon content (If the pile smells like ammonia, it needs carbon).


4.Dust-free metal tools

Position a small chunk or two of charcoal in your toolbox or tool-storage cabinet may help keep rust off metal tools. – They inhibit moisture in containers and keep the metal from oxidising.


5.Entertain Kids and Adults

Substitute your ‘tiny’ pencil with a piece of charcoal to sketch hopscotch squares or other game templates on your floors. You can also draw and write as you would with chalk on blackboard. Simply wash away the marks with quick blast of water from your hose, swipe with clothes or mop them off.

6.Healthy and Happy Garden

Keep soil healthily and deter weeds in your garden, break charcoal into smaller chunks and spread pieces on soil beds or beneath bushes

7.Temporarily fix scratches on wooden furniture and other fittings

Do a quick fix to your furniture scratch, before you find a real repair job. Gently rub a smooth charcoal piece on the scratches on furniture/floor made of darkwood.

8.Charcoal ashes in cleaning kitchen utensils off burnt marks

Mix appropriate amount of ashes with small amount of household cleaner solution such as Mama Lemon brand. Clean away the more stubborn burnt stains on bottom of your stainless steel pot, pan and other metal utensils.


9.Whiten Teeth Naturally

Place some dried fish bone and a chunk of charcoal under the newspaper and pound with a meat tenderizer. Make sure to pound the ingredients until they are all in adequately mixed powdered form. Moisten your toothbrush before you dip it in the powdered charcoal. Brush teeth and rinse mouth. Repeat if necessary. Be sure to swish around in your mouth several times before spitting.


*Like all commercial products, charcoal are best replaced every few month to ensure the optimal performance.
